Why You Need to be Aware of Your Income and Your Expenses

The income that you bring in is something that you need to be aware of, as well as the expenses that you are paying. And why is this? The most obvious answer is so that you are not spending more than you make. When this happens the person is going to find that they are going to have bank accounts that are going into the negative, and that they are going to basically be living beyond their means. However, there are other important things that this is going to help you with understanding. When you know your income and expenses, then you are going to have a better idea of what you can afford to spend, such as what you can afford for a monthly payment on a vehicle or a home. So how are you going to know your income and expenses so that you can make these decisions?

Knowing your income is rather simple. You simply need to look at how much your paycheck is every week. If you are getting paid on a salary then you know that the check is going to be the same from week to week. However, those that are working hourly, should make sure that they are basing their income on their regular check and the amount of hours that they are guaranteed to get to work that week. Relying on overtime that you may get paid as part of your regular income can come back and hurt you in the end.

When looking at the expenses that you spend, you are going to have to look at this for a week or month, if you find this easier. Expenses refer to the things that you are buying that are both set and not set as things that you need during the month. For example, fixed expenses are going to refer to the water, electric, gas, mortgage, rent or other expenses that you have to have in order to live. Groceries are also going to count in this category, though you may find that you spend less from week to week. You are going to want to add in those expenses that may be something that you routinely buy, such as those that buy cigarettes or spend a lot of money each month on entertainment.

So why do you need to be aware of these two amounts? The biggest reason is to make sure that you are not spending more than you make. Those that have a good idea of what they are bringing in and what they are spending are going to be able to make a budget that they can easily stick to that may even allow them to put some money into a savings account for a rainy day. Secondly, those that know this information are going to better be able to know what they can and cannot afford, which can help in the long run, when you may be considering buying a new vehicle or so forth. Overall, you need to know this if you are taking any initiative into your financial world.
